Dirt bikes are not for everyone, however if you know that the person you are gifting is of age and licensed appropriately per your local ordinances; is a safe driver; is responsible enough to not let anyone else ride or drive; (if under 18 in U.S.) will abide by your rules regarding which areas they can drive on; and can benefit from the transportation; this may be a good gift for them or even one you can buy yourself.

It is important for the bike owner to be familiar with local ordinances before purchasing, and for ensuring they know exactly what their parents expectations are, if they are not an adult.

Know the Ways to be Safer on Dirt Bikes.

Despite the fact the safety precautions and licensing may be required in your local area, dirt bikes can be a good way to teach responsibility, and to ease up on the need for parental transport.  Older teens, specifically, who are 1-2 years away from adulthood, need to be given responsibility and to know what it means to be held accountable in real life situation.

If you are an adult, dirt bike riding can be a great way to relieve stress, find others of like interests to associate with or for general sport.

There are steps that can be taken to make riding safer for your family member and for you:

  1. Understand how to properly operate your bike before taking it on the rode.  study the manual.  See if there is a safety training class or driving school offered in your area.
  2. Be sure to have the appropriate licensing and legal requirements [can't stress this enough].
  3. Wear a helmet and other safety gear.
  4. Keep up with preventive maintenance.
  5. Ride in safety clothing that fit well and can help protect you in case of falls.
  6. Never drive under the influence.
  7. Know the area or dirt bike trail you will be riding in, i.e. pot holes, ditches, unpaved roads, etc.
  8. Join a bike riding social media group to get tips from experienced riders.
